Pan Am medal drought continues

Surfer Chelsea Tuach keeps Barbados’ hope alive for a medal at the 19th Pan Am Games in Chile.

A medal at the 19th Pan Am Games continues to elude Barbados, as Kyle Spenard bowed out of the rowing competition.

Spenard finished at the bottom of the 17-man Single Sculls event, in a total time of eight minutes and 09.31 seconds.

After a week of fierce competition in Santiago, Chile, only surfer Chelsea Tuach remains in contention for a coveted medal.

Tuach secured her spot in the third round of the women’s shortboard with a score of 8.67 in her head-to-head match against Colombia’s Isabella Gomez, who scored 8.23.

The win paves the way for Tuach to compete on Thursday against Chile’s Estela Lopez.

In her Pan Am Games debut, Tuach is harbouring the hope of securing Barbados’ first surfing medal at the Games since the discipline was introduced as an official event in 2019.
