Bajan held in Jamaica on drug charges

A Barbadian man is facing charges in Jamaica over his alleged attempt to smuggle J$16 million (BDS$206 436) worth of cocaine out of the Caribbean island.

Kelvin Charles appeared in the St James Parish Court on Monday on charges of possession of, dealing in, attempting to export and conspiracy to export cocaine, and was remanded. He is due to return to court on Friday.

According to the Jamaica Observer, reports are that about 10 p.m. on October 26, 2023, Charles was about to board a flight from the Sangster International Airport to London when his luggage was searched. During the inspection, a package with two kilogrammes of cocaine was found.

Attorney-at-law Dalton Reid told the court on Monday that he was approached to represent Charles, but there are still some details to be sorted out. He requested that the case be rescheduled for Friday and said he would be able to advise the court at that time. The lawyer also indicated that he intends to apply for bail on that day.
