Weymouth Wales advance to quarterfinals of Republic Cup

Reigning champions, Weymouth Wales inched closer to retaining their BFA Republic Cup title, with a 4-0 win over Carlton Red and White in the round-of-16 matches this week.

Rashad Smith (14’), Akeel Applewhaite (21’), Shaquille Stuart (45’), and the icing on the victory cake by Nadre Butcher in the 87th minute, did the trick for Wales as they marched into the quarterfinals.

Last year’s finalist, Ellerton, also strolled into the quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory over Whitehall on Thursday thanks to goals from Shane Codrington and Jacob Bishop.

Wotton threw a goal-scoring party, trouncing fellow Premier League outfit Paradise 4-0, while Brittons Hill played it cool to beat Notre Dame 2-0, ensuring their ticket to the next round was stamped.

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Blackbirds spread their wings wide, grounding Silver Sands with a solid 3-0 win.

Deacons were also in winners’ row by defeating the Barbados Football Academy 4-1.

Kickstart went toe-to-toe with Pride of Gall Hill before securing a thrilling 5-3 win, and Empire edged Central League Spartans 3-2.

The champions have their eyes on a dazzling $30 000, while second place will receive $15,000 and the third-place team will strut away with $7500.

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament will walk away with $5000.

The spotlight extends beyond the winning team, acknowledging stellar performances with awards like the Under-20 MVP, the top goal scorer, best midfielder, the top goalkeeper and the best defender. (RT)
