Schools rewarded for inclusivity of disabled

In a display of commitment to inclusivity, the Barbados Council for the Disabled (BCD) organised the ‘My Inclusive School’ awards ceremony on Friday.

Educators, advocates and supporters joined together in a quest to establish an environment of equal opportunities for disabled students in primary and secondary schools across the island.

The ‘My Inclusive School’ awards served as a platform to acknowledge and commend schools demonstrating exceptional dedication to fostering an inclusive atmosphere for students with disabilities. They were recognised for implementing innovative practices, accommodations, and initiatives aimed at tailoring education to meet the needs of every child.

Various speakers addressed the imperative for inclusivity within the education system, emphasising the collective need to ensure that every student, regardless of ability, enjoys access to quality education and a supportive learning environment.

Angel Birch, a teacher from the Olga Miller Nursery School, emphasised the significance of accommodating sensory processing impairments.

“Addressing the sensory needs of students in nursery schools provides them with the ambience that is conducive to developing fundamental skills,” said Birch. “We believe that focusing on sensory needs is a priority in order to ensure that children reach their full potential in the educational environment.”

A notable moment during the ceremony was the donation of $1 000 to the BCD by Kathie Daniel, a representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
