Final day of BAMC operations

Scores of sugar workers are collecting their green papers at the Portvale Sugar Factory in Blowers, St James this morning.

The process started just after 9a.m. and is being done in alphabetical order.

Last Friday, the workers visited the factory to collect their severance packages but were told to return today as the accounts and human resource departments had not finished completing the paperwork.

It is reported that field workers are also collecting their papers from the various plantations they worked at.

From tomorrow, the cooperative movement will be in charge of all Barbados Agricultural Management Company Co. Ltd (BAMC) operations.

The Barbados Sustainable Energy Co-operative Society Limited (Co-op Energy) has registered two new entities – the Agricultural Business Company Ltd. (ABC), and Barbados Energy and Sugar Company Inc. (BESC) – which will be responsible for the production and sale of sugar.
The workers are expected to be rehired under the new companies at a later date. (SZB)
