Jayden Walcott wins silver and Teon Haynes leaps to bronze on Day Two of Carifta Games

Day two of the Carifta Games at the Kirani James Stadium in Grenada saw Barbados add to their medal haul with a bronze and a silver.

Teon Haynes leaped to a third-place finish in the Boys Under-20 Long Jump with a best effort of 7.32m. Jamaica’s Rickoy Hunter took gold with a jump of 7.48m, followed by Bernard Kemp of Bahamas at 7.40m. Haynes held the lead after his fourth attempt but couldn’t improve on his final two jumps.

In the evening session, Jayden Walcott secured a silver medal in the Boys Under-17 Shot Put. Walcott uncorked a personal best throw of 15.37m on his fifth attempt, launching himself from outside the medal positions to second place. Javontae Smith of Jamaica dominated the event with a throw of 18.80m, while Bahamas’ Jaylen Stuart claimed bronze at 15.28m.
Barbadian athletes also competed in several other finals and qualifying rounds. Tylan Mayers finished a respectable 7th in the Boys Under-20 High Jump, clearing 1.95m. The competition was tight, with five athletes achieving the same height, and countback rules determining the final placings. Jamaica’s Chavez Penn took gold at 2.13m, followed by Grenada’s Timothy Greenidge at 2.05m.

Aragorn Straker impressed in the Boys Under-20 200m, qualifying for the final with the fastest time of 20.86 secs and winning his semi-final heat. However, teammate Yazid Daniel finished 6th in his semi-final and couldn’t progress further.
In the Girls Under-20 200m, Kadia Rock and Kelia Bentham narrowly missed out on the final, clocking 24.26 secs and 25.26 secs respectively.

Aniya Nurse, who already has a bronze medal in the Girls Under-17 100m, qualified for the 200m final in that age group, finishing second in her heat with a time of 24.68 secs.
Barbadian distance runners Isis Gaskin and Lashay Wilkinson placed 6th and 8th respectively in the Girls 3000m Open. Gaskin and Wilkinson finished with a time of 11:12.21 and 11:34.04 respectively. The winner was Jamaica’s Kaydeen Johnson with a time of 10:04.44, second was Ashara Frater (10:24.83) from Jamaica and third was Attoya Harvey (10:36.59) from Guyana.

In the Boys 3000m Under-17 Barbados Luke McIntyre worked his way from the back to finish 5th in a time of 9:33.73. The winner was Demetrie Meyers from Belize in 9:05.86. Second was Wyndel Beyde (9:21.30) from Aruba and third was Isaiah Alder (9:29.35) from Trinidad and Tobago.( CG)
