In line with its corporate commitment to offer help to communities around the island, the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited (BPWCCUL) has helped the management of the Soroptimist Village return one of the units to full usage.

During a recent restoration exercise, BPWCCUL staff volunteers visited the Eden Lodge, St Michael facility to fix up the unit.

Group CEO of BPWCCUL, Glyne Harrison, told Barbados TODAY the project was important to the group.

“It initially came out of a sponsorship request from the Soroptimist Club for the refurbishment of units in the Soroptimist Village. The sponsorship committee made the decision to offer support by way of refurbishing one of the units” he said. “We thought this might be a good launch for a community engagement project where the staff can get involved and give back to the community which reflects our strategic commitment to fostering meaningful connections and enhancing the quality of life in our communities. This initiative definitely aligns with our long-term vision of being an organisation that not only achieves business success but also drives positive social change and leaves a lasting legacy of care and compassion”

Stacy Mottley, Community Relations Officer at BPWCCUL, said this type of community involvement is timely given that the residents of the village are of the same demographic of the union’s founding membership.

“We really thought that this was a really good initiative. It brings us great pleasure to support the refurbishment of units in Soroptimist Senior Village. This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to empowering the wellbeing of our members and the communities we serve. By restoring these units, we aim to give back in a meaningful way through improving the quality of life for a demographic that has made positive contributions to Barbadian society. This is a project we are truly proud to be a part of and we believe it will make a lasting impact on the lives of those who call Soroptimist Senior Village, their home.

“We sought to find out exactly what additional needs the Soroptimist Senior Village had apart from the refurbishment of the unit. [They] highlighted a few which [needed] painting, then there are some other units that are still out of commission that could benefit from refurbishment, but those are more significant projects than we couldn’t do at this time,” Mottley explained.

She said there is another proposal for staff members to volunteer to spend time with residents to further support the social aspect of the village’s work. (SB)
