Trinidadian Fide master Joshua Johnson is the new leader in the ‘Masters’ standings of the Barbados Chess Federation’s Heroes Day Cup.

Johnson holds a narrow half point advantage after his victory with the white pieces over previous leader, Panamanian IM Roberto Carlos Sanchez Alvarez in Monday evening’s seventh round.

Alvarez is in second position on 4.5 points, while Barbados’ hopes rest on IM Orlando Husbands who sits third on 4 points.

In the penultimate round, Husbands will meet Venezuelan IM Felix Jose Ynojosa Aponte whom he previously defeated in round 3 with the black pieces.

Aponte holds fourth on 3.5 points, while the new leader Johnson takes on Cuban Grandmaster Luis Lazaro Aguero Jimenez who is in fifth position.

Barbadian FM Martyn Del Castilho scored his first points of the tournament with a draw against Husbands yesterday.

Del Castilho, who has a game in hand against Aponte, will look forward to a strong finish to the tournament in his final games against Alvarez and Johnson.
