Sir Lloyd deserving of National Hero title

Sir Lloyd Erskine Sandiford transitioned from this life on June 26, 2023.One year after his death, the Democratic Labour Party pays tribute to a man who was a selfless nation builder and a true national hero.

Among the legacy of Sir Lloyd is his steady, dogged commitment to the Structural Adjustment Programme which this country entered with the IMF during his tenure as Prime Minister of Barbados from 1987 to 1994. The medication which was prescribed for the nation was not pleasant. Sir Lloyd’s broad political back took all the barbs which were hurled at him in his stride. He never wavered from his commitment to see the programme fully implemented as he knew it was the best course to correct the structural economic challenges which this country faced. As a result of these economic measures, the economy of Barbados rebounded and experienced real economic growth well into the decade of the 90s. He protected the Barbados dollar from devaluation.

Sir Lloyd’s praise came years after when the country could sit back and reflect on the political sacrifices which he made so that the Barbadian economy and society could rebuild and thrive. He was honoured with a knighthood by his main political rival, the late Prime Minister Owen Arthur.

As Barbados currently goes through an IMF programme, there is some usefulness in reflecting and comparing the way Sir Lloyd dealt with his challenges back then and how the current programme is being implemented and managed. Many laudable social and economic models were birthed out of the Sir Lloyd’s programme: The Social Partnership, The Productivity Council, as well as building capacity in foreign exchange earning sectors. As a country, we saw the value of the cost saving and we recognised the importance of the revenue generating measures. The overall expenditure of the government was reduced, and cash flow showed signs of improving, the dollar was protected.

Sir Lloyd’s legacy also extends to his ministerial work as a Minister of Education. He can be regarded as one of the most prolific ministers of education in this country as he rolled out a policy to establish several of the newer secondary schools in Barbados, and the Barbados Community College.

As we reflect on the contribution of Sir Lloyd, let us remember that he was a true statesman who gave selflessly to the development of this country. He left a legacy which is fitting for him to be considered as one of the National Heroes of Barbados.
