Barbados’ newest Centenarian celebrates in style

Seibert Adolphus Lewis, the island’s latest centenarian, enjoyed his birthday in fine style with family and close friends on Wednesday.

He had a special reception at Accra Beach Hotel, Christ Church, and was greeted by Acting President Dr Jeffrey Gibson.

The acting president congratulated Lewis on reaching the milestone and engaged him in conversation. The two spoke about the importance of family and enjoying a quality life.

“By the grace of God, I am very happy to know that I am alive to reach 100 years old, and through my family and I, my children, my grandchildren and great-grandchildren, we all make one bond,” Lewis told the acting president.

During the ceremony, the tributes flowed. The speakers spoke highly of Lewis’ character – his love for being a father to children who were not his own, helping others, his strong sense of community and his love for God.

Adopted son Roger Scott said, “He is not my biological father, but a father to me. He has provided me with immeasurable support and love over the last 20 years. He has been a blessing to me and my family. He has opened his heart and home to all of us, so much so that I am one of the few who has a key to his home.”

His daughter Heather Lewis-Sweeney said that Lewis was born in Barbados but migrated to St Croix in 1967. He was a budding entrepreneur, owning two businesses – a construction firm and a fruit and vegetable outlet.

He returned at age 65 to enjoy his retirement and currently lives in Free Hill Crescent, Black Rock, St Michael. When he returned, he gave of his time and expertise and helped construct the Black Rock Wesleyan Holiness Church. He spends most of his time there, ministering or assisting with activities.

Although he is independent, she said, Lewis is looked after by a carer.

Lewis has seven children. His wife, Lucille, passed away at age 72 in 2012. (SZB)
