Elderly man dies in The City

An elderly man collapsed and died while selling newspapers at the intersection of Trafalgar and Ricketts Street in Bridgetown on Thursday morning.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m.

Eyewitnesses told Barbados TODAY that the man, who occasionally filled in for a regular newspaper vendor, was seen carrying out his duties when he suddenly collapsed.

Ambulance personnel on the scene at Trafalgar and Ricketts Street, Bridgetown.

“I just see him sit up, gasped a few times before he collapsed and hit his head on the ground,” said one eye witness.

“People rushed to help him but when they checked his pulse they said they couldn’t feel any.”

The eye witnesses said the police and the ambulance were notified.

They say the deceased was a familiar figure in the area, often stepping in to help with newspaper sales when the usual vendor was unavailable. (SM)
