Rain grounds kites but love for them soars in Andrews

Despite heavy showers and an overcast sky, the Andrews, St Joseph community remains determined to keep its Easter kite flying tradition alive.

As part of the We Gatherin’ celebrations for the eastern parish, Andrews was set to take centrestage on Monday, showcasing the vibrant kite-flying culture that defines the community. Several food stalls were set up on the pasture next to the old Andrews Sugar Factory, along with an entertainment stage.

However, the weather has brought unexpected setbacks, affecting the villagers’ ability to fly kites. There is little to no wind and rain will make the ropes and tails too heavy for flight.

In a creative pivot, organisers decided to erect scaffolding so that kite enthusiasts could still admire and photograph the larger, more elaborate kites on display.
