Against the backdrop of an elegant ballroom filled with dignitaries, diplomats, and distinguished guests, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Barbados marked a significant milestone this week, hosting a grand reception on Thursday, September 25 at the Hilton Barbados Resort to celebrate the 76th Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

The evening reflected not only the legacy of China’s modern nationhood but also the strength of the enduring partnership between China and Barbados.

Delivering remarks on behalf of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Barbados, China’s Ambassador to Barbados Zheng Bingkai paid tribute to his country’s remarkable journey since 1949. He described the transformation of China into a global leader in economic development, technology and social progress as nothing short of historic.

From groundbreaking advancements in green energy, infrastructure, and innovation, Bingkai stated “China’s achievements have redefined their place on the world stage.” He further pointed to China’s achievements in poverty alleviation, modernisation, and global governance, highlighting that “China has lifted nearly 800 million people out of poverty and continues to contribute to peace, climate action and international collaboration.”

The ambassador also emphasised China’s commitment to sustainable development, international cooperation, and building a shared future for humanity, while reaffirming strong bilateral ties with Barbados. He also described the friendship as one rooted in respect, equality, and a shared determination to achieve growth and progress — words that were both reflective and forwardlooking, and signaled optimism for deepening bilateral relations in an increasingly interconnected world.

Representing the Government of Barbados the Honorable William Duguid brought warm congratulations to the Government and people of China on behalf of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and Minister of Foreign Affairs Kerrie Symmonds, who were unable to attend due to official duties. In his address, Duguid echoed the sentiments expressed by Bingkai, acknowledging China’s remarkable journey over the past seven decades and its global contributions to peace, stability and development.

Duguid also used the occasion to highlight the critical role China has played in supporting Barbados’ own developmental trajectory. From investments in renewable energy to advancements in healthcare, agriculture, public transport, and education, he noted that Chinese assistance has consistently complemented national efforts to modernise and build resilience.

Among the examples he cited were the fleet of electric buses which transformed public transportation in Barbados, the redevelopment of the National Stadium, and the contributions of Chinese medical teams who have provided vital healthcare services on the island. Scholarships and educational exchanges offered by China were also singled out as instrumental in shaping opportunities for young Barbadians, enabling them to gain exposure to new skills, knowledge, and cultural experiences. “The friendship between our two nations continues to be strengthened by these initiatives,” Duguid said, expressing appreciation for China’s steadfast partnership.

As the speeches came to a close on the celebratory evening, guests were treated to a vibrant cultural showcase that featured traditional Chinese artistry alongside modern performances. From ballet to karate demonstrations, the programme reflected the diversity and richness of Chinese culture, while also underscoring the value of cultural exchange in fostering greater understanding between nations.

Ultimately, the reception was more than a celebration of an anniversary. It was an affirmation of the shared aspirations of two countries committed to working together in areas such as trade, technology, sustainable development, and cultural exchange. Both sides expressed optimism for the future, with clear signals that cooperation will continue to deepen in ways that benefit not only Barbados and China but also the broader global community. (DT)
