Local News US immigrant visa halt leaves Barbadians in limbo, says DLP Lauryn Escamilla16/01/20260311 views Dr. Dawn-Marie Armstrong The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) urged the government to act swiftly following the suspension of United States immigrant visa processing for Barbadian citizens, warning that the disruption is stranding families and derailing education and career plans. In a statement, St Michael North candidate Dr Dawn-Marie Armstrong said the party was “expressing profound concern” at what she described as a sudden change Barbadians are facing. “Having navigated immigration systems beyond our shores, we view with deep sadness the limitation of opportunities now being imposed on Barbadians as a people,” she said. “This development directly affects … the many Barbadians whose future plans, whether to reunite with family, advance their careers, or pursue educational opportunities, have now been placed on indefinite hold.” The DLP noted that the timing of the suspension has heightened anxiety, coming amid public discussion on potential asylum-seeker arrangements. While not drawing conclusions, the party said the situation demands “the full and immediate attention of the Government of Barbados”. Calling for transparency, the DLP urged the government to clearly outline its response. Among the questions raised were what steps are being taken to engage US authorities, why Barbados was affected, and whether resolving the visa issue is being treated as a priority. “Clarity and transparency on this issue are essential,” the statement continued, adding that “the well-being of our citizens and the protection of their opportunities must always guide national policy.” The party also underscored the emotional and social stakes for Barbadians, describing family reunification and access to overseas opportunities as “a deeply held aspiration within our society”. The DLP urged the government to keep the public informed as efforts continue to address the suspension and to work towards restoring what it described as a “vital pathway for Barbadian citizens”.
