Fun rivalry at Erdiston Teacher’s Training College Sports

Academic pursuits took a back seat on Friday as defending champions Yellow House put their title on the line during the Erdiston Teacher’s Training College Sports at Pine Hill.

Comprising a mixture of traditional races and novelty events, the island’s teachers took the event very seriously, with Red and Green House in particular having extremely vocal participants and supporters.

Speaking to Barbados TODAY, Meet Director and Social Studies tutor Dr Sonia St Hill described the event as a family affair.

“We want persons to come together to show love, to show cooperation, because we know right now in our society we’re having a spillover when it comes to our young people and crime, and this is where it starts in terms of teachers’ education.

“So we want to equip our novice teachers with all of the skills necessary, so that when they get into the school they can continue what we’re doing here, building family, building relationships, and building a community,” Dr St Hill said.

“So it starts with the novelty races where we have little ones and their parents running together and passing on and fighting for positions, but of course at the end they’re all going to be rewarded. So it is going to be that type of day for us here at Erdiston and the teachers seem to be really invested so far.

“This is our third year since COVID in terms of having active sports and already we can feel what is going to happen here in terms of the excitement and enthusiasm,” she added.
