Campbell backs fresh start ahead of Sri Lanka showdown

Opening batter John Campbell struck an optimistic tone on the second day of the West Indies’ high-performance training camp in Antigua, declaring that a clear tactical blueprint and total team buy-in have put the side on the right path ahead of their ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Speaking to CWI Media in a sit-down interview, Campbell reflected on the morning’s work, which he already sees bearing fruit.

“I think our session went pretty well this morning. We’ve had some plans in place, and I think the way we’ve been implementing them over these training sessions — we’ve had conversations before this camp as well about what we need to do as a team to get better — and I think that everybody has bought into it and we’re heading in the right direction,” Campbell said.

The 10-day camp is being framed by team management as far more than a routine fitness refresher.

It is intended as the launchpad for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka in Jamaica, and a foundational block in a wider, 18-month strategy to revive the West Indies’ fortunes in the 50-over format.

“Well, obviously, every series matters. Every series carries a lot of weight so for us, we just want to take it a game at a time. If we go there and execute our skills, then we should be good,” Campbell said.

The opener’s focus was laser-sharp on the importance of early momentum as he believes the key to a series success lies in a fast start.

“I think once we can start well, once we can get a win in the first game, it will aid us in winning the series,” he said. “I think once we have a platform, then we could build on it throughout the series.”

The Coolidge Cricket Ground has been a hive of intense drills, simulated match scenarios, and tactical meetings, with the coaching staff emphasising discipline and execution.
