(JB) This week will be one of reflection for the island’s lone electricity company as it marks 115 years of existence on the island. Marking the anniversary, staff of the Barbados Light and Power Company (BL&P) opened its week of activities by joining the congregation of the Dalkeith Methodist Church for a thanksgiving service on Sunday. The choice of venue was significant, as Dalkeith Methodist was the first church in Barbados to receive electricity. Some of the BL&P staff in attendance at the church service. Noting the theme ‘Blueprints of Excellence’, HR business partner Sonia Haynes-Collymore said that this reflected some of the values shared with the religious institution, including those of building strong relationships, caring for people, prioritising well-being, and striving for excellence. Welcoming the group, church member Antoine Williams highlighted the importance of the company, noting that it had been a long-time social partner within the community and wider Barbadian landscape. Later this week, the BL&P will host a variety of events to continue the commemorations, including an Employee Appreciation Day, a time capsule ceremony, a football tournament, and an awards ceremony to recognise outstanding contributions to the company’s long history of service.
