Soca monarch swaps stage for summer camp to inspire youngsters

Soca Monarch Mikey Mercer turned his attention from the stage to the classroom on Friday, using his moment in the spotlight to encourage dozens of youngsters to pursue their ambitions and stay resilient in the face of setbacks.

Fresh off his double triumph as the 2026 Power Soca Monarch and Party Monarch, he turned up at the South Stars Community Summer Camp at Maxwell House, Maxwell Main Road, Christ Church, where he encouraged the youngsters to believe in themselves, pursue their dreams and remain determined despite life’s challenges.

He said: “Sometimes children can be a little harsh…some people have told me that because of how their dreams were attacked by other people, they shied away from them. I am fortunate to do what I do as a job, I think we have to plan that seed of going after your goals and dreams [in children].”

Camp director Tiffany Beckles said the six-week programme has attracted about 50 children with a mix of educational and recreational activities designed to keep them engaged throughout the summer.

The campers have visited the airport fire station and George Washington House, while also taking part in robotics and coding sessions.

Friday’s programme included the filming of a music video, a robotics presentation and a visit from former Junior Monarch King K.

The camp caters to three age groups – four to six, seven to nine, and 10 to 15 – allowing activities to be tailored to the children’s ages and interests.

“So far, the music video that’s happening right now [and] the fire station was their favourite,” Beckles said, adding that campers have also visited 13 Acres and are looking forward to an upcoming trip to the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary.

With the camp set to close on August 21, Beckles said organisers are planning to end the summer on a high note.

“Our last lap, right now we have a sports day and a fun day for the last lap,” she said.
