A 34-year-old Christ Church man charged with assisting an offender and several traffic offences has been remanded to Dodds Prison and is due to appear in the Oistins Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Miguel Rico Ranaldo Daniel, a general worker of Thornbury Hill, appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Douglas Frederick in District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court No. 1 on Wednesday afternoon, where four charges were read.

These include that, knowing or believing that accused Tyrese Farrell had escaped lawful custody, he, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, assisted Farrell by transporting him in a motor car; that he drove a motor car on Church Hill Road and, on the approach of a police vehicle sounding a siren, failed to draw his motor car as close to the left as possible; and that he drove on Evergreen Road without due care and attention and without reasonable consideration for other road users.

No pleas were taken for the offences, which allegedly occurred on August 16.

Sergeant Victoria Leacock objected to his release, citing concerns that, given the allegations before the court, Daniel may attempt to evade trial and that, upon stopping the vehicle, he left the scene and was not apprehended at the time.

But defence counsel Damien Sands told the court that, based on his instructions, his client did stop the vehicle when he heard the siren and remained in the car, but police did not approach him. He stressed that the accused was gainfully employed and was not known for offences of this kind.

He asked that Daniel be released and that bail conditions be set.

The case was transferred to Oistins Magistrates’ Court, where Daniel will appear on Thursday.
