Attorney General Wilfred Abrahams told a media launch of the National Calendar of Independence Celebrations at Ilaro Court on Friday that the milestone offered an opportunity for Barbadians of all ages to participate and create lasting memories. He said: “Barbados, the countdown to 60 and five is on. Our entire team is excited, the ideas have been flowing, preparations taking shape, and today, we want to share that excitement with you.” He continued: “That is a moment to savour. Some Barbadians will remember the first raising of our flag in 1966. For many of our children, this will be the first major national anniversary that they remember. “We have an opportunity to give them memories that they will carry for the rest of their lives. We want Barbadians of every age and in every community to feel that there is a place for them in this celebration.” Among the initiatives planned are Let We Paint Barbados and a National Clean Up Campaign, which will encourage communities to improve their surroundings. “Imagine the difference neighbours can make when they get together to help someone paint a home or care for shared space,” Abrahams said. He also encouraged Barbadians to participate in Barbados Day Fridays by wearing the national colours and flying the flag, while urging citizens to make a personal “promise to Barbados”. “It could be teaching a young person a skill, spending time with an elderly neighbour, or starting a family habit that brings everyone closer,” he said. Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Youth and Culture, Senator Shane Archer, said the anniversary logo was designed to reflect Barbados’ national identity while looking towards the future. “Our anniversary logo brings the 60 and five together beneath a rising golden Trident with the Pride of Barbados flower at its base in blue and gold,” he said. “It celebrates our national identity and looks confidently towards the future. We want Barbados to feel proud to carry this logo.” Archer also announced discounts on paint for the Leh We Paint Barbados drive. Harris Paints will offer savings of up to 30 per cent, with selected products discounted by 60 per cent on designated days, while Sherwin Williams will offer 30 per cent to 60 per cent off selected paints. The offers begin on Monday and are open to all residents. He also welcomed the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s offer to provide labour for 60 homes. Other initiatives include My Voice, My Barbados, a national oratory competition involving primary, secondary and tertiary students. Archer also highlighted the annual football tournament the Prime Minister’s Cup, which will feature a women’s competition for the first time, with a first prize of $100 000. “The final on November 30 will help round off our 65 celebrations,” he said.
