Jangoo: India series a true Test for West Indies

West Indies batsman Amir Jangoo believes the upcoming three-match One-Day International series against India will provide a valuable measure of where the regional side currently stands.

Jangoo’s assessment mirrors that of head coach Daren Sammy, who has also identified the series against the world’s top-ranked ODI side as an important opportunity for West Indies to test their progress.

The series bowls off on Sunday in Thiruvananthapuram, with West Indies facing an India side that currently occupies the top spot in the ICC ODI rankings.

For Jangoo, the objective is straightforward — compete strongly and give themselves a chance of winning the series.

“I think for me it’s just about having a good start to my ODI career so far, so I’m looking to push forward in that and get some big scores for the team and help us win some games.”

Jangoo top scored for Antigua Falcons in the CPL final, as they won the regional competition for the first time. He’s also looking to maintain that form in the upcoming games.

“Having to put up my hand for the team in a big game like that and to get a good score was a good feeling. So yeah, good confidence going into this game.”

Jangoo described the West Indies’ failure to automatically qualify for the ODI World Cup as disappointing, but backed the regional side to bounce back. 

“The team has had discussions already that this, as I said, is a benchmark going forward for us to challenge ourselves against one of the best teams in the world.

“We will use this series here to really test ourselves and give us even more confidence going into those qualifiers.”
