Man admits string of food thefts

A 40-year-old man who admitted to stealing food and other goods from three businesses this month was remanded to Dodds Prison pending sentencing on Wednesday.

Shiamar Tshaka Callender, 40, of no fixed address, appeared before the District ‘A’ Traffic Court and admitted stealing two hams valued at $200 belonging to Jordan’s Supermarket on October 10.

He also admitted stealing cheese, sliced ham, luncheon meat, coconut bread, juice, energy drinks, chocolates, deodorant, and soap, valued at $125, from Zephirin’s Bakery on October 11.

Callender admitted that the following day, he stole hot dogs, salt bread, hamburgers, nuggets, juice, and bacon, valued at $75, belonging to Hibisco Investment.

He further admitted stealing hamburgers and nuggets valued at $63.75 from Zephirin’s Bakery on October 17 and damaging the business’ door.

“I have a problem with the ‘white lady’, Sir,” Callender told the magistrate, adding that he had been asking for help to overcome his drug addiction but had never received it.

“You could have walked into the Psychiatric Hospital or any polyclinic and asked for help. It did not have to come to this,” Magistrate Jared Richards said as he remanded him to Dodds Prison.
