Rooting for Granger

Guyanese living in Barbados are hoping that David Granger’s ruling Partnership for National Unity-Alliance for Change (APNU-AFC) retains the presidency of that South American country.

As Guyanese voters headed to ballot boxes today with Granger and Irfaan’s Ali’s opposition Indo-Guyanese People’s Progressive Party-Civic (PPP-C) thought to be the main contenders, several Guyanese who now call Barbados home indicated that they have been closely monitoring the elections and were awaiting the final results.

They told Barbados TODAY that regardless of which party wins they want the progress which they said Granger and his team started, to continue.

There is much global intrigue to see the new government that will oversee the highest amount of oil find per person anywhere in the world.

Abiola Harrison said she hoped that the day’s proceedings turned out to be peaceful and fair.

“I don’t really care who wins, I just want the best for the country. I think Granger did a lot and a lot has changed because many people went back home and they said they really like what they see so I think that we should give him another chance and see what happens. The oil find is a good thing because it gives us a chance to rebuild the country from where it was. I think they should give him a chance to continue his work,” Harrison said.

Aubrey Rodney said he was not concerned about the atmosphere leading up to elections, though he admitted that he knew everybody was anxious about it, based on the economic predictions for that country.

“I basically am not a person who involves myself in a lot of politics so it wouldn’t really interest me. My whole thing is waiting to see what the results are. But I want the best for my country and I think that the present Government is doing a wonderful job.

“I think that if all Guyanese could put their heads together and try to do things in harmony with each other I think we could go far seeing that we got oil and all these things going on. Guyana is a country that got a lot of resources; we got timber, we got gold, we got diamond, we got sand, we got lumber. I am just waiting to see where it goes from here,” Rodney said.

“To be honest, I would like the incumbent to get back in power because I personally feel that is the best party to rule Guyana at this point in time.

“APNU is doing a lot for education in particular and the corruption and murders and all of those stuff on the decline,” Dale Blair who has called Barbados home for 32 years remarked.

Oslin Barrow said she pleaded with her entire family in Guyana to vote APNU because she wanted them to continue to see progress in their lives.

“Every right-thinking Guyanese would tell you they want Granger get back in. Since he running things I am so proud to see how my country developing when I go home. Granger even get the crime situation under control. The young people in my family getting jobs and cars because of how good things going in the country now. I hope the people vote back in my Granger,” Barrow said.

One man who requested anonymity said that while he once supported the PPP-C, he decided to change parties since Granger won the last elections.

“When I see what this man start to do and see the changes he start to make I tell my family this is a man that care about Guyanese people and I is a Indian man saying so,” the man said. anestahenry@barbadostoday.bb
