DLP: 2023 slate to be known soon

President of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Verla DePeiza has given an assurance that Barbadians will soon know the party’s candidates for the next general elections, constitutionally due in 2023.

DePeiza said she could not reveal the names of interested figures at this time, but indicated they could be named at the DLP’s annual conference in the coming weeks.

She told Barbados TODAY: “We still have a couple meetings going on and as you know we have Annual Conference coming up so we will make a statement, but we have always to be aware of the danger. Some are job-sensitive so we have to be mindful of that.

“But as soon as we are in a position to make a statement we will let all of you know, but I cannot confirm anything at this point.”

There have been several reports that past candidates who stood in the 2018 general elections, which doomed the DLP to its ouster from all parliamentary seats for the first time since its creation in 1955, are planning to return.

Former Member of Parliament for Christ Church East and Minister of the Environment and Drainage, Denis Lowe, revealed two weeks ago he would be contesting the 2023 general elections.

DePeiza said the DLP would issue a statement once due process had been followed. (RB)
