Court Couple charged with breaching protocols Barbados Today18/02/2021248 views A husband and wife were hauled before the law court today on a breach of one of the COVID-19 protocols. The COVID-19 Monitoring Unit has alleged that Jasmattie and Stephen Grant, of Crawford Land, Black Rock, St Michael being the owners of Sawyers Variety failed to keep the establishment closed as mandated by Paragraph (3) subparagraph (1) of the Emergency Management (COVID-19) (Curfew) (No.3) Directive. They plead not guilty to the February 6 charge when they appeared before Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes today in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court. Their attorney Mohia Ma’at informed the court that due to the architectural design of his clients’ house they had no choice but to open the door to the shop which is located at the front of the dwelling. “They can’t get any ventilation . . . so I am asking for permission for them to open the front door,” Ma’at submitted to which the Chief Magistrate said that they could open the windows. However, the lawyer said that too could pose a challenge with ventilation given the direction the wind is blowing at any given time. The request was not entertained. The Grants’ will return before the Chief Magistrate on May 4 when it is expected that they will go on trial. The case is being prosecuted by Special Investigator to the COVID-19 Monitoring Unit Ronald Cummins.
