Husbands’ brace lengthens his lead

Christopher Husbands won astride Phil In The Blank.

FORT ERIE, Canada – Runaway leader Chris Husbands stretched his lead at Fort Erie even further when he produced a double on Tuesday’s seven-race card.

The 31-year-old paired with favourite Gold Venture to win race two before returning to capture race four with another favourite Super Garner.

With the success, Husbands now has 32 wins for the season, 17 clear of Guyana-born Sunny Singh in second, with reigning champion Juan Crawford of Barbados third on 14.

Both Singh and Crawford also tasted success on Tuesday’s programme.

However, Husbands took the spotlight, opening his account over 6-½ furlongs when he guided Gold Venture to a 2-¾ length victory over the three-year-olds and upward.

He tracked the duel between Dr Chappell and Ice Blue before snatching the lead at the top of the stretch and powering the four-year-old chestnut gelding to the finish.

Husbands’s second win also came over 6-½ furlongs when he combined with seven-year-old chestnut gelding Super Garner to trounce the three-year-olds and upward by 3-¼ lengths in a front-running effort.

Meanwhile, Singh won race six over 6-½ furlongs with favourite Seau, carrying the seven-year-old bay gelding to a dominant 2-½ length win over the three-year-olds and upward.

Crawford also made his presence felt in race seven, partnering with 7-1 choice Tourist Attraction to get the better of the three-year-old and upward maiden fillies and mares by three lengths over seven furlongs.

And Jamaican Howard Newell had earlier also tasted success in race with 20-1 longshot Shamruckus, edging the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares by a neck over seven furlongs. (CMC)
