Thief to know penalty for conviction No. 37 next year

A convicted burglar who earned a reputation as a “reputed house breaker and robber” will be sentenced early in the New Year.

Akeem Ricardo Griffith, of Montrose, Silver Hill, Christ Church, will know his fate on January 28, 2022, when he returns to the No. 4 Supreme Court before Madame Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell.

Griffith had earlier pleaded guilty to the charge that between December 5 and 6, 2015, he entered the dwelling house of Everton Evelyn as a trespasser and stole items valued at $26 994.

Through his attorney-at-law Leslie Cargill, the convicted man who has 36 convictions, challenged Crown Counsel Kevin Forde’s suggestion that 24 of those convictions were for offences committed under the Theft Act.

“On the last occasion the person who would have clarified the convictions would not have been here but the prosecution had assisted the court by saying that there were 24 similar convictions on Mr Griffith’s record. However, Mr Griffith is challenging that so if we could just have that cleared,” Cargill noted.

When Griffith’s conviction card was read into the court it was revealed that he had three convictions for theft, 14 for burglary and seven for robbery.

Justice Smith-Bovell then accepted that the convicted man indeed had 24 similar convictions.

The court also heard that Griffith had spent 428 days on remand at HMP Dodds in relation to the offence.
