APP candidate accuses BLP of broken promises

Barbadians, particularly the constituents of Christ Church East Central, are fed up with the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) “circus politics”.

That is the view of Shawn Tudor, who will be running in that constituency on an Alliance Party for Progress (APP) ticket come January 19.

When he turned up for Nomination Day at the Milton Lynch Primary School on Monday afternoon, Pastor Barbara Wilkinson acted as his proposer and Jonavon Grandison as his seconder.

Tudor told Barbados TODAY that constituents wanted an end to broken promises.

“The residents of Christ Church East Central, just like the majority of people in Barbados, are victims of the old school politics and the Barbados Labour Party circus politics where you come out and you make big promises and you have grand theatre and grand shows and so on, then the election happens and the performers, for the most part, disappear and people are left with broken promises – exactly what we’ve got here,” he said.

“As I walk through the constituency so far, the cry is that, ‘I want some work for the children, I want a job for the boy, the boy ain’t got nothing to do.’ The unemployment is a problem because for the US$1.9 billion that the Government has borrowed in the three and half years, what investment has been made to assist the youth, the youth employment, the youth development? This has been the major failing of the Government, and in terms of entrepreneurship and giving people hope and a brighter future and opportunities to progress, there hasn’t been a genuine, sufficient attempt to help ordinary people in the country and in this constituency, in particular.”

Tudor said he had been invited to run as a candidate and was encouraged by the level of support he had received to date.

“I am feeling up to the task. It is a considerable amount of work to do and the work now begins, getting to as many of the constituents as possible. I’ve been visiting this area from since 2015. I’ve had connections with some families here, supporting some families, involved in church activity in the area, but as a candidate that is only very recently,” he said. (RB)
