Local News NCF uplifts Queen’s Park Barbados Today Traffic18/03/20220298 views Another vibrant mural has appeared in the heart of Bridgetown compliments the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) and artist Rae Garnes entitled ‘Remember Us’. The mural was commissioned to enhance Queen’s Park as part of its refurbishment project. Rae Garnes is a past top graduate of the NCF and Ministry of Youth’s 2002 Youth Achieving Results Visual Arts programme and skilled visual artist. Garnes has applied his design ability to various products including murals, textiles, stage design and more. In 2003 he travelled to Surinam as part of Barbados’ youth contingent to CARIFESTA 9 where he assisted the Curatorial & Theatre Arts team. Garnes is proficient in various art media and has contributed to the National Exhibitions programme at NIFCA and Crop Over over the years. This design and his most recent contribution to the island include motifs representing the tobacco plant and cotton plant native to Barbados, both of which were early cash crops grown on the island. The design also includes some of the Adinkra symbols drawn from the Akan culture of West Africa including the Adinkrahene circles which represent greatness, charisma and leadership. NCF’s Chief Cultural Officer Andrea Wells noted that “the mural pays tribute to less well-known aspects of Barbadian culture, with a nod to contributions from both First Nations and West African contributions to our Caribbean civilisation”. Floor murals have emerged as a hot new trend and have gained popularity as a way to uplift a space and will add charisma and charm to Queen’s Park, for those who traverse the space will have the opportunity to view the mural on the pathway to the Gazebo.
