It is always refreshing when a schoolboy performs outstandingly in a major local cricket Competition.

Hence, take note of the name Nathan Sealy, who is captain of the Barbados team for their defence of the regional Under-17 Tournament in Trinidad & Tobago, July 17 to 28.

After the halfway stage of the round robin in the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Elite/Division 1 Super Cup Championship, all-rounder Sealy has been brilliant with the ball, having captained both Foundation and SigniaGlobe Financial Barbados Youth ‘B’.

In five matches, Sealy, a left-arm spinner and right-hand batter, easily boasts of the most wickets (22), as well as the best average – a miserly 4.72, the best economy (2.23) and best figures (seven for seven, including a hat-trick), from 46.3 overs.

His figures show: (For Foundation) 10-0-29-3 v Fusionz Boutique Spartan at Church Hill; 9-2-13-3 v SigniaGlobe Financial Barbados Youth ‘A’ at Crumpton Street; (For Barbados Youth ‘B’) 9-1-23-6 v Police at Weymouth; 9.3-4-7-7 v Carlton at Desmond Haynes Oval; and 9-0-32-3 v Sagicor Life UWI ‘A’ at Waterford.

Sealy’s switch from Foundation to Barbados Youth ‘B’ was due to a decision to have the national Under-17 squad playing together in preparation for the regional Tournament.

He has been handy with the bat, too, scoring 121 runs (Ave: 24.20) including a highest of 77 against UWI ‘A’.

As far as the top wicket-takers are concerned, another Foundation schoolboy – 14-year-old off-spinner Akobi Critchlow-Byer – is in second position with 15 (Ave: 13.06; ER: 5.44) in four matches.

Sealy and Critchlow-Byer are the only other bowlers with two five-fors.

Critchlow-Byer picked up five for 37 against Barbados Youth ‘A’ (Series 2) and five for 56 against St. Catherine at Church Hill (Series 5).

Apart from Sealy and Critchlow-Byer, nine other bowlers have taken five wickets in a match. They are: Camarie Boyce (Empire) 5-34 v Sagicor Life UWI ‘B’ at Bank Hall (Series 1); Dominic Drakes (Carlton) 5-34 v UWI ‘A’ at 3Ws Oval (Series 2); Tariq O’Neale (Barbados Youth ‘A’) 5-43 v Foundation at Crumpton Street (Series 2); Rasheed Padmore (Police) 5-39 v Barbados Youth ‘B’ at Weymouth (Series 3); Rey Matthews (Wildey) 5-52 v St. Catherine at Bayfield (Series 3); Ryan Hinds (Empire) 5-11 v BWU Gladiola at Rices (Series 4); Andre Marshall (Spartan) 5-24 v ESA Field Pickwick at Queen’s Park (Series 4); Jerome Jones (Wildey) 5-24 v Pickwick at SJPIT (Series 5); Davien Branker (Spartan) 5-33 v Bayview Hospital YMPC at Queen’s Park (Series 5).

Leniko Boucher, the Carlton opener, has stood out in the batting with 316 runs in three matches, having been dismissed only once. He is also the only batter with over 300 runs and two centuries.

His centuries are 178 not out v IGS Insurance Brokers Yorkshire at Friendship (Series 1) and 138 not out v IDL Walkers Sand Quarry Isolation Cavaliers at Desmond Haynes Oval (Series 3).

Boucher missed the last two rounds because of a contract in Canada, which is expected to end in September.

His club-mate and fellow opener Rashawn Worrell has the second highest aggregate of 280 (Ave: 56.00) including 156 against Yorkshire.

Eight others have scored centuries: Jai-Bari Yarde (Empire) 100 not out v UWI ‘B’ at Bank Hall (Series 1); Raymond Kellman (YMPC) 135 not out v St. Catherine at Beckles Road (Series 2); Giovonte Depeiza (Gladiola) 108 v Pickwick at Foursquare Oval (Series 2); Roshon Primus (Wanderers) 106 v Police at Dayrells Road (Series 2); Matthew Forde (UWI ‘A’) 102 v Carlton at 3Ws Oval (Series 2); Demario Richards (UWI ‘A’) 101 v Yorkshire at 3Ws Oval (Series 3); Shayne Moseley (Wanderers) 156 not out v Yorkshire at Friendship (Series 4); Akeem Nero (Yorkshire) 102 v Lords at Friendship (Series 5).
