BLP confers its highest honour — the Grantley Adams Award — on Senator Elizabeth Thompson

Senator Elizabeth Thompson was moved to tears as she was conferred with the Grantley Adams Award. The announcement was made during the Barbados Labour Party’s 83rd Annual Conference Awards Ceremony held Friday night.

Named after Sir Grantley Adams, National Hero and one of the BLP’s founders, the Grantley Adams Award is the highest honour that the party confers on any of its members.

“I didn’t think I would cry,” Thompson said after being presented with the award by BLP Leader and Prime Minister Mia Mottley.

“Thank you so much for recognizing that I have contributed to this party, that I love, that I serve.”

The presentation to Thompson was pre-recorded. She currently is in the United Kingdom where a family member died recently.

Thompson said Barbados has given her some much, and she hopes “to be able to continue sharing and giving something in service”.

“This means a tremendous amount to me and it will to my family,” she said.

The party also recognized several long-standing members, including:

  • Cathy Brathwaite, St Michael West

Member of Parliament and first vice-chair of the BLP, Kay McConney, presented ‘a token of appreciation’ to guest speaker — St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonalaves.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament and first vice-chair of the BLP, Kay McConney presented “a token of appreciation” to guest speaker — St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonalaves. 

“It is a piece of Barbados, made of something that is natural and spectacular and enduring just like you,” McConney said.

She thanked Gonsalves “for showing us how leadership at this time is about pushing the boundaries of possibility.”

In his address, Gonsalves spoke of seven unities,which he said the awardees should bear in mind.

They are:

  • Unity of Vision
  • Unity of Philosophy
  • Unity of Policies and Programmes
  • Unity of Our Caribbean Civilization and in Global Solidarity
  • Unity of Organization
  • Unity of and with the Leadership of the Party
  • Unity of the People in Communion with Almighty God
