Queen of Song Carlyn Leacock dies

Barbados’ Queen of Song Carlyn Leacock died on Thursday after a brief illness, at the age of 73.

In a statement, family members said Leacock, who blazed a trail on the entertainment scene since starting her career more than four decades ago, “passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones”.

They asked for privacy at this time and pledged to issue a statement in the coming days.

Leacock, a versatile entertainer who gained regional and international acclaim, will be remembered for her hit songs Love And A Song, Just as Long as We Have Love, Take A Chance on Me, If I Can’t Make You Mine and The Clock.

Members of the entertainment community have started to pay tribute to the late songstress.

“To many she was First Lady of Song, but to me she was my confidant, prayer warrior, greatest inspiration, musical mother and simply Aunty Carlyn,” said entertainer Jamal Slocombe.

“I became her protégé, her son and I am forever indebted for her embracing compassion and kind patience.”

Leacock leaves to mourn her two daughters, Jan and Debbie Gibson and the wider Leacock family. (BT)
