The Sagicor Junior International Tennis Tournament resulted in a second consecutive regional win for Dimitri Kirton. The Under-14 tournament concluded in Saint Lucia at the weekend, with Dimitri once again beating his little brother, Zane, for the title.

The boys draw in the Sagicor tournament, like the Chatoyer Tournament the week prior in St Vincent & the Grenadines, was an exciting all-Barbados showdown. And of course, it was a family showdown.

Dimitri secured his place in the final by defeating Matteo Gutierrez from El Salvador in straight sets (4-2, 4-2). Zane advanced by overcoming Josiah Hills from Trinidad & Tobago in straight sets (4-0, 4-0).

The third and fourth seeds, 13-year-old Dimitri and 12-year-old Zane played to a third set tiebreak in the Saint Lucia final, Dimitri eventually prevailing 4-0, 1-4, 10-8.

The Kirtons once again faced Gutierrez and Giovanni Quinn in the doubles final. Quinn is from Antigua & Barbuda. He and the Salvadoran were the top seeds, and champions a week earlier in St Vincent & the Grenadines.

Gutierrez and Quinn made the final with a 1-4, 5-4 (11), 10-8 win over Trinidad & Tobago’s Josiah Hills and Christopher Khan. The Kirtons were handed a medical walkover. But the 2 seed Kirtons were not to be denied in the final this time around. They won 4-1, 5-3.

Dimitri now has three consecutive U14 singles titles. Both boys are students at Queens College.
