Thorne resigns as DLP president

Ralph Thorne has resigned as President and Political Leader of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), the party confirmed today.

 

His resignation follows the February 11 general election, in which the DLP failed to secure a seat in the House of Assembly for a third consecutive time.

A senior party executive, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Barbados TODAY the party has entered a period of “renewal and refreshing” and is focused on restructuring and charting a way forward.

While no permanent successor has yet been named, the executive indicated that the party’s constitutional structure — which includes four vice-presidents — allows for continuity in leadership during the transition.

The DLP also confirmed plans to reinstate a formal Shadow Cabinet to respond to national issues and maintain its role as a government-in-waiting.

The party’s annual convention, traditionally held in August, is expected to address leadership matters.
