Jamaican woman remanded in custody on criminal charge

A Jamaican woman is now on remand at HMP Dodds charged in connection with an attack on a man.

Lenice Abigail Townsend, 26, who resided at Sealy Land, Bank Hall, St Michael is accused of causing serious bodily harm to Corey Noel on September 22 with intent to maim, disfigure or disable him or to do some serious bodily harm to him.

She was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

The prosecution objected to bail based on the nature and seriousness of the offence as well as the strength of the evidence.

The Crown further submitted that Townsend was a non-national who is scheduled to leave the country in December. It argued that if granted bail she might not surrender to court on given dates and added that there was a need to protect the complainant and society.

Her attorney-at-law Neville Reid in his bail application submitted that there were no substantial grounds set out against his client’s bail. He submitted that Townsend has no prior convictions in Barbados or her homeland and had been visiting the country for the past few years.

Reid added that the complainant was not hospitalized and that Townsend has a strong defence.

But Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes denied the accused bail.

Townsend is set to reappear before the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on November 12.
