PC Welch’s killer’s sentencing now on November 5

The sentencing of cop killer Applon Ishmael Ithamar Parris has been pushed back to November 5.

The case was adjourned on Tuesday when it was called before Justice Randall Worrell during a virtual sitting of the No. 2 Supreme Court.

Parris, of Taitt’s Road, Britton’s Hill, St Michael is awaiting his fate after pleading guilty to non-capital murder in the death of 31-year-old Police Constable Shayne Welch, whom he stabbed 19 times in his Kingsland, Christ Church driveway on March 26, 2018.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Donna Babb-Agard QC is seeking a starting prison sentence of between 30 to 35 years for the convict on the grounds that such a serious matter called for a lengthy sentence and not the starting point of between 20 to 25 years submitted by Parris’ defence counsel Safiya Moore.

Parris in a recent address before the High Court apologized. He said while he “acknowledge, accept and understand” the seriousness of the offence that he committed, the deadly result of his actions that morning was never his intent.

He said: “What I have done is horrendous and appalling and nothing I do or say can change that no matter how I wish for it to be different.

“It was never in my thoughts or in my intentions that day to take anyone’s life or for that matter to cause the pain and anguish suffered by the deceased’s family, the members of the Royal Barbados Police Force and also my wife.

“I am so sorry for causing the death of Shayne Welch.”
