DLP President says party will serve Barbados

The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) is ready to serve Barbados, declared President Dr Ronnie Yearwood as he delivered the feature address at the party’s 68th anniversary service on Sunday at Restoration Ministries, Brittons Hill, St Michael.

“This great party has served this country for 68 years and we want it to do another 68 years…because at its core, this party has to be and is always about the people,” he stressed.

As he quoted Isaiah 6:8, where the Bible prophet stated his willingness to serve the Lord, Yearwood said politics is not about perfection but rather the desire to serve your country

“Politics is not about enrichment, politics is not about self. You do not have to be perfect to serve your country, you do not have to be perfect to serve your party, and you do not have to be perfect to serve your community. You just have to hear the call and go.”

Noting that the DLP had in some cases lost its way, Yearwood maintained that it would not be deterred from playing its role and serving the country.

“If you had told me years ago that I would be the leader of the Democratic Labour Party, I would have said you’re crazy but I’ve always felt called to serve in this role. I’m not a perfect leader, I don’t know everything nor do I understand everything but through my own imperfections I received my commission through this party”.

He added that quick fixes in politics should never be the goal.

“Some of us will labour in the vineyard but we will not drink of the wine and that is true service. Errol Barrow didn’t see the outcome of half the things that he created but all of us have benefited from them. That is true legacy, investing in people and serving when you are called.” he stressed.

Dr Yearwood challenged party members and supporters at the service to serve in whatever capacity they can whether it be country or community.

“This country requires all of us to stand up. Now more than ever this country requires all of us to serve it in a way that it has never been before.”

” Sometimes I tell the older members of the party that I’m sorry to ask them to do this again, but during these unexpected times, that is simply the process of life. We will do what we are called to do and if we are called to service we will serve,” he said.
