(FP) The Barbados Men’s XV rugby team is set for a series of three international games in the coming weeks. Speaking during an interview with Barbados TODAY, public relations officer with the Barbados Rugby Football Union Kathie Daniel revealed the team is scheduled to travel to St Vincent for the opening encounter on May 30. This fixture originated after another team was no longer able to travel to that island. “We’ve been offered the opportunity instead, so we’re going to take that with both hands. Now on June 6 we have an official international test match with Guyana’s Men’s XV team coming to Barbados. That will take place at the historic Garrison Savannah at seven under the lights,” Daniel disclosed. Daniel is predicting an extremely competitive game given the longstanding rivalry between the two sides. Barbados will be pressed into action the following week when they face Cayman Islands. “On June 13 Barbados will face Cayman Islands in Cayman, so we have three international matches in a row for the men. It’s fantastic and I’m really glad to see this level of participation and fixtures because as you know, COVID put a serious dent on international and regional rugby,” she added. According to Daniel, the team is currently hard at work in practice ahead of the upcoming games, with experienced captain Enrique Oxley leading by example. “He works very, very hard and is very skillful. We also have some new players and while I have not seen the lineup for the game in St Vincent as yet, I am sure some of the newer players are going to be getting their first international caps. Kudos to them for the hard work and for achieving this milestone,” she said. (KH)
