The St. Martin’s Mangrove Primary School recently observed Literacy Month under the theme “Literacy is for Everyone” where students were engaged in various activities that highlighted the importance of literacy.

One major activity was an internal original story competition where students from the junior school submitted their original stories with complementing illustrations in book form.

Local author Voughn E. Tatem, along with organizations such as the St Philip Polyclinic Environmental Health Department, Gemini Supplies & Stationery and Johno’s Pizza partnered with the school to host this competition.

Winners from this competition emerged from Class 4B with the story “Singing to the Beats”.

Students also interacted with Felicia Gaskin from the deaf community as she shared interesting information on the “deaf and literacy”. The National Library Service also visited the St. Philip School so that students could be involved in their outreach programme, as exciting stories were read.

The parents of the students also participated in these activities. They were exposed to fun and effective ways to assist their children with reading at home, as reading specialist Tricia Parris conducted an interactive parent workshop at the school.

“Character Day was the culminating activity where students and teachers wore attire depicting various characters from stories, movies, and rhymes. Literacy teacher Alicia Johnson stated that students were enthused with the various activities which aimed at building a love for reading. (PR)
