It was a night of both laughter and tears, but above all, it was a demonstration of love. Barbadians came out last Sunday night to Solidarity House for an evening of music and hope in a benefit concert hosted to assist ailing singer/entertainer Sharon Darlington.

Darlington who was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer was brought to tears throughout the evening as several of the island’s musical talents belted out tune after tune in her honour and in the effort to raise funds for much needed medical attention overseas. And there were many awe-inspiring performances.

Trinity Clarke, who continues to register performances that outstrip the reality that she is a mere 14-years-old, gave a superb rendition of Shirley Bassey’s classic “This Is My Life”. Such was the impact of the performance that Sharon, who had requested the song, it being her winning offering as a former Teen Talent winner in 1991, was moved to tears. She led the standing ovation that erupted in the auditorium after the performance.

Cultural Ambassador Alison Hinds made her usual regal presence felt, while showing her versatility as she sang Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers To Cross”.

The song stirred emotions and was an appropriate selection for the occasion. She then teamed up with Ronnie Morris to offer the 1992 CBU Song Festival winning piece “Hold You In A Song”, much to the delight of the audience.

A surprise for the night was the appearance of fellow Cultural Ambassador, Dr Stedson ‘RPB’ Wiltshire, who entered from the back of the auditorium and temporarily transformed the atmosphere to one of praise and celebration while offering his signal hit Alive, much to the delight of Sharon who danced with joy.

Veteran entertainer and founder of the Richard Stoute Teen Talent Contest Richard Stoute expressed his appreciation to not only the patrons but the artistes who gave off their time and talents for the worthy cause. Stoute who assisted with the hosting of the event thanked those for attending and asked for their continued assistance for Sharon.

But the highlight of the show was when Sharon was asked by the patrons to grace them with a song and she complied, delivering one of her winning 1991 songs “Never, Never, Never”, also made famous by Bassey.

Sharon who could not contain her tears also expressed similar sentiments as Stoute and thanked those who attended and those who performed for their generosity and support during this difficult time in her life.

The night was made up of the other talents of Cultural Ambassador Dr The Most Honourable Anthony “Gabby” Carter, Antoine “Brudda Daddy” Williams, Colin Spencer, Janisha Best, Kymani Devonish, Natalie Hinkson, Kayla Alleyne, Jalissa Edwards, Kereese Chase, Ki’Ann Browne, Shane Headley, Anita Elcock, Tavon Boyce, Rashida Codrington, Chad Bowen, Troy Arthur, Lisa Griffith, Rickey Aimey, Peter Cox, Shontae Alleyne-Clarke, Sandra Boyce, Henderson Quinby, Chrystal Austin, Betty B, Laurie Ann Caines, Shurnell Clarke, Shirley Stewart and Sherry Boyce.
