A young man who was caught with an air gun is to know his fate in just over two weeks.
When he appeared before Justice Carlisle Greaves on Friday in the No.3 Supreme Court, Tre Decourcey Lowe of Allamby Gap, Spooner’s Hill, St Michael, admitted to having a .177 caliber Ruger air pistol, declared a firearm under the Firearms Act, in April 2019.
Moments after prosecutor Crown Counsel Rudolph Burnett accepted the guilty plea, Lowe’s attorney-at-law Shadia Simpson asked the court to move speedily to sentencing, saying that while her client had broken the law, he had been caught with an air pistol and had no previous convictions.
Simpson said: “Given the particular course that Mr. Lowe has taken this morning I would ask that on the next occasion we have the time read in and I am also instructed that if the court is so minded that we waive the right to a pre-sentencing report in this matter.
“The circumstances related to Mr. Lowe is that his grandfather recently passed as well as his grandmother, so I would be most grateful to the court for any swift action that can be taken in this matter.
“I would also point out to the court that this is a matter involving an air gun or what is called a BB gun, so even though it is a firearm within the meaning or definition of the Firearms Act, I would submit that based on the type of firearm involved this is a matter that hopefully, we should be in a position to dispose of quite swiftly.”
Justice Greaves then set aside May 11 for sentencing.
