A father’s grief over the Saturday night slaying of RBPF Acting Station Sargeant Newton Lewis on Monday turned to rage against the criminal justice system and the men who took his son’s life.
Anthony Lewis, 69, told Barbados TODAY he is so full of rage over the senseless killing of the first of his four children that he would also like to see the perpetrators who pumped bullets into his son’s body, evoking piercing screams throughout the neighbourhood, die as tragically as his son did.
He declared bluntly: “I feel real angry. If I had some sort of superpower, I would destroy a lot of people and that is the way I feel.
“You got people terrorizing people. You just put them in jail and feeding them. You working hard as ass when the day comes and your tax is being taken from your money and going and feeding people and these same people terrorizing your backside.
“And you got people going in a court and arguing technicality and all kind of piss and men getting out and walking about. You got men walking about that kill two and three people. The Bible tell you that from the time a man commit murder you should get rid of he.”

Former Acting Station Sargeant Newton Lewis.

Acting Station Sargeant Lewis was off-duty when he was alerted to an armed robbery in progress by a shopkeeper a few metres from his home at Rose Hill, St Peter. As he responded, he was fatally shot by three gunmen around 9.05 p.m.
Police confirmed that the slain officer’s service weapon was also been taken by the assailants. He became the first officer to be gunned down in the line of duty in over 30 years.
From the patio of his Whim, St Peter home, Anthony Lewis said he was in the area where the incident happened enjoying a drink with friends. In fact,  he said he left Rose Hill at around 8:58 p.m, a mere seven minutes before Newton was gunned down.
He said when he arrived at home and was in the process of taking off his shoes, he received an unforgettable call from the “proprietor of the shop” informing him that his son was just shot and appeared to be dead.
“Well, you know what happened from there,” Lewis recalled. “I get a burning in the belly. I start to tremble. God bless David, I had a nervous feeling. And when I get on the spot, well all I could do was look at my son stretched out dead.”
The father said seeing his son’s lifeless body was one of the most difficult things he has ever had to do in his life.
“I am still seeing him in front of me on a regular basis and once in a while I am still getting that little nervous feeling,” he told Barbados TODAY.
Lewis said he was not ashamed to admit that his son, whom he described as a respectable young man, was a better “man than I was at 46”, leaving him to wonder why a man of such calibre has been taken away from his loved ones and friends.
He proudly stated that the fallen officer was a devoted father to his four children and to his wife.
He declared: “Newton was a fella that was making his father proud. I was very proud of Newton for the simple fact that I had a father that wasn’t of any use and even though I fall into some of his footsteps, I still tried to be a better man than my father was.
“And Newton come along and never did some of the things that I did. And when you can come and take away a man from his family that kind of way, you expect me to be pleased. I would like to kill all of them.”
Lewis explained that Newton’s ailing mother Alincia Lewis gave him a call Sunday and all she could struggle to get out of her mouth was that “they killed her son”. (anestahenry@barbadostoday.bb)
