Police are said to be questioning a man in connection with last Saturday’s fire at a house in 1st Avenue, Chapman Lane, The City, St Michael that claimed the life of one woman and left two others hospitalized.

Fifty-eight-year-old Janice Mitchell, the owner of the house, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, while undergoing treatment at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Her daughter, 40-year-old Keisha Mitchell and her one-year-old daughter are said to be still in critical condition.

Last Saturday, emergency crews were called around 2:35 a.m. to respond to the fire.

Police said a resident smelled smoke and then saw Mitchell’s house engulfed in flames. The neighbour alerted others in the district and broke down the front door of the house and tried to extinguish the blaze.

Several other residents rendered assistance until fire tenders arrived.

Investigations are continuing. (SD)
