In a press statement, he disclosed that he contacted the officers of the constituency branch to explore the โpossibility of being their constituency representativeโ. He said: โPersons should be aware that I am a Christ Church man, having lived in Silver Sands, Maxwell, Dover, Rendezvous and now Warners.โ The Anglican cleric also indicated that while he has been focusing exclusively on the presidency of the DLP, he has been persuaded by both party members and the country at large to apply his leadership skills and passion not only to administrative but political leadership. Reverend Hewitt declared that he returned to Barbados for the first time after being trapped abroad due to the COVID-19 pandemic with no intentions of finding himself running for the position of presidency of the DLP but instead to support his party and country. However, he said: โPeople told me that I need to stand up and step forward to provide the much-needed leadership to our party. I now am being encouraged to consider getting involved in the hustings and looking for a constituency. People have been asking what is my resolve and what is my commitment.โ Reverend Hewitt reaffirmed that he committed to leading the party and a constituency branch to a next general election whenever Prime Minister Mia Mottley calls it. โWe are going to be ready. The race and the fight will be on,โ he said.
