The global minimum tax rate which has been devised by the world’s rich nations and set to be actioned soon, is among the hot topics up for discussion when
Global Business Week 2021 (GBW 2021) is staged from October 24 to 30.
The highly successful annual event, which for the second consecutive year will be staged virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, includes a dynamic three-day conference featuring some of the biggest names in tax and regulatory issues. Among them will be Bruce Zagaris of Berliner Corcoran & Rowe in Washington, and Chris Sanger, Ernst & Young’s tax policy leader for the UK.
Derrick Cummins, President of BIBA, The Association For Global Business, said the imminent global minimum tax is expected to be “soon fully conceived and shaped” and represents “one of the biggest hurdles” that the industry has faced for some time. Also for discussion during the conference component of GBW 2021 is an examination of the establishment of a free trade zone in Barbados, focusing on the successful Panama template.
“We will also examine staffing in the pandemic era and alternative work arrangements. That does not only mean telecommuting or remote work but includes flexi time . . . and a compressed work week where you do 40 hours of work in four days, rather than five.
Cummins, who regards himself as a big cheerleader for the sector, insisted there were many reasons for those in international business to be excited about its future.
Cummins, the chief executive officer of Amicorp Bank and Trust added: “It is a sector that continues to employ over 4 000 people in high-paying jobs. This, even
though there are some internal matters that need to be improved relating to the platform on which we do business.
“There are many reasons for this current group of workers and the prospective workers, innovators and entrepreneurs to be excited because international business is a thriving sector and with lots of opportunities.” (PR)
