Banks Holdings Limited (BHL), one of Barbados’ longstanding and respected corporate entities, is ensuring Barbados’ environment is preserved and enjoyed also by future generations.

In a gesture designed to elevate the importance of climate resilience, BHL presented 250 trees to the Barbados Trailway Project, an exciting and ambitious venture that is creating a miles-long pedestrian and bicycle pathway along the country’s famous old train line.

That railway, launched in 1881, ran through several parishes and sugar plantations before it was abandoned in 1937.

The bicycling and walking path, which is still being established, will be a nature lover’s dream and educational haunt for Barbadians and visitors.

In a presentation on October 11, the Newton, Christ Church-based beverage manufacturer sourced hundreds of plants including popular fruit trees from the National Conservation Commission (NCC) for donation to the Barbados Trailway Project.

Banks (Barbados) Brewery Ltd, a subsidiary of BHL, currently celebrating its 60th anniversary, collaborated with the NCC which is pursuing its national goal of planting one million trees.

Each of the 250 trees presented was symbolic of an employee of the BHL Group which has 250 staffers.

Anya Frederick, BHL’s Public Relations and Communications Officer said Banks Beer, the iconic beverage of the BHL group, has been a staple on the island for six decades and the company thought it fitting as part of corporate celebrations, to join forces with the NCC to advance their Better World Goals.

“The BHL Better World programme aims to strengthen our contributions to society and aligns our companies with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” Frederick noted.

She added: “The ‘WE PLANTIN’ project of the NCC aims to fight climate change by planting one million trees to reduce our carbon footprint and provide trees for conservation, recreation and food.

“This also supports the goal of the Barbados Trailway Project which will offer a space for recreation through walking, hiking, or cycling.

“The path is also lined with an assortment of fruit trees that will be accessible to anyone traversing the path.

“We are excited to work with these two organisations in achieving one shared vision which is to build a more sustainable Barbados.” (PR)
