If the Minister of Energy, the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister responsible for Town and Country Planning do not continue to constantly collaborate on applications for the setting up of Photovoltaic Energy systems on large tracts of land owned by plantations and large rural residences, then Barbados’ food and nutrition security may be lost forever.

One notices the several paid announcements in the Print media stating intentions of establishing solar systems on several plantation lands across the country.

One hopes that the lands being utilised are marginal rab-lands owned by these plantations and not prime and optimum agricultural land.

It should be obvious to all and sundry that the more beneficial option is placing photovoltaic panels on roof-tops instead of occupying good land that is best for the planting of food crops.

What an excellent opportunity to fully engage and facilitate owners of residential and commercial buildings to be part of and assist in the building out of the sustainable renewable energy sector, while at the same time protecting and preserving our limited pool of agricultural land. We cannot afford to be a penny wise and a pound foolish.
