Mount Gay Distilleries remains committed to maintaining a clean and healthy environment. This was the message delivered by the company’s managing director Raphael Grisoni, as he gave brief remarks during a special ceremony held at Brandon’s Beach on Wednesday in recognition of World Ocean Day.

The evening’s presentation, also signalled the distillery’s commitment to the ocean and the beach in particular, with Grisoni revealing that the company will now take on a greater role in keeping the area clean.

“Today is a special day because here at Mount Gay, we know sustainability is at the heart of what we do. I think in terms of sustainability, we have been in activity for more than 300 years so we know what sustainability is about. We know about sustainability in our business, taking care of our people, taking care of our environment… so today is a special day,” he said.

Over the years, the company has taken great pride in maintaining the state of the beach, with several trees being planted, along with the installation of benches for public use, as well as several clean-up exercises being conducted by staff in order to keep the site free of refuse.

He added that though Mount Gay has done a lot in the past for the site, this new commitment will now see a greater emphasis from the group in maintaining the area, and developing a more significant green space for Barbadians.

“Symbolically, today what we would like is to own this space and make it better for all the people of Barbados, and that they feel comfortable coming here on Brandon’s. So we at Mount Gay have made a commitment to take care of this beach, we want to make sure we continue to do well for the future, continue to contribute to the greening of this beach which is very important to avoid the soil erosion, so will we have [more] tree planting,” he said.

Deputy General Manager at the National Conservation Commission (NCC], Kerri-ann Jessamy, praised Mount Gay for its commitment to the area, and said companies and locals not only had the responsibility to keep the lands clean, but the oceans as well.

“NCC is pleased to partner with Mount Gay Distilleries in maintaining this beach that we stand on, they would have done work previously as the managing director has stated before, and NCC commits to any partner that wants to beautify and maintain not only the terrestrial, but also the marine,” she said.
