BFA says it is focused on development

The Barbados Football Association (BFA) has reiterated its commitment to leading the charge in implementing develomental initiatives in all facets }of football in Barbados.

BFA general secretary Edwyn Wood said today that while recent defeats in international matches

were naturally disappointing, the BFA remains steadfast in its mission for continuous improvement
and is focused on progressing the sport on the island to reach its full potential.

“While the national men’s results have not been in our favor, we are cognisant that we have been coming into these games off the back foot after the pandemic seriously impacted our ability to train, play and compete,” he said.

“At this point in time, rather than focusing on the scoreboard, we view these tournaments as opportunities for our young side to fine-tune their skills and get some much-needed international experience under their belts.”

Wood cited the BFA was in the early stages of rolling out its fresh 2022-2025 Strategic Plan, which was written in collaboration with key stakeholders, incorporating feedback from local clubs and advice from various internal committees.

“Our Strategic Plan is firmly entrenched in delivering quality developmental programs and opportunities to those involved in football in Barbados at all levels. We have a variety of initiatives either underway or in the planning stages to ensure that we fulfill our commitment
to continue to further develop our players, officials, clubs, coaches, and facilities.

“The appointment of our new Technical Director Emmerson Boyce, our innovative FIFA Talent Development partnership, and the exciting progress made in the laying of new turf at our Wildey facility are just some examples of key projects that are already in progress and speaks volumes to the BFA’s dedication to guiding the growth of local and national football for all,” Wood said.

More specifically, Wood added that the Association has plans for the provision of continued education and guidance for coaches, further support  for clubs and officials, as well as improved training sessions and  assistance with scholarships for players, marking the start of a pivotal new chapter for the BFA.

Complementing this will be the launch of what Wood has coined the “official return to football in Barbados” – the Republic Cup and the Women’s Super League.

“If things go according to plan, we will be hosting the comeback of football on the island in August.

“This will give all our players the consistency they need to ramp up their training, and build on their match experience, so we can remain optimistic that we will start to see different results internationally moving forward.

“At a more grassroots level, we know that football has a strong legacy in connecting our communities and is a big factor in many of our young people’s social development, so we are keen to ensure football’s return is not delayed any further than it already has been.”

Wood confirmed more details about the Republic Cup and Women’s Super League will be announced next month and that the BFA was delighted to be moving into a new era defined by increased collective governance, financial sustainability, technical, league and club development, high performance infrastructure and ultimately football success.  (PR)
