St Gabriel’s School’s Renelle Best, who achieved perfect scores in Mathematics and English and an A in Composition, is the top female and overall performer in this year’s Barbados Secondary Schools Entrance Examination (BSSEE).
The top male and second overall performer is Azario Gooding of St George Primary who scored 97 in Mathematics and 100 in English and A in Composition.
Best’s overall score was 242.91, while Gooding scored 241.33. Both are headed to Queen’s College.
Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training Kay McConney made the announcement today during a press conference at the Ministry of Education where she indicated that this year’s BSSEE results were better than in 2021.
She said efforts were already underway to ensure all stakeholders strive to do better in 2023.
“And let us all come together as we start to move towards reform to be able to do so together with all of our partners in education,” McConney said.
Aaden McClean of Charles F Broome, who scored 241.02 and obtained an A in Composition, is the third top overall student; while Amira Henry of Hindsbury Primary who scored 240.65 and A in Composition, took the fourth spot.
Both McClean and Henry will attend Queen’s College.
There were 3 086 students registered to write the 2022 BSSEE, 250 fewer than in 2021.
However, 27 students did not sit the examination on July 5 due to medical reasons, compared to the 60 who were absent last year. The absent students were later assessed using an alternative paper on July 19.
Minister McConney said 23 students were granted permission not to take the examination this year, when compared to 47 in 2021, 54 in 2020 and 42 in 2019. (anestahenry@barbadostoday.bb)
